March 29 – Composers: Diederik van der Laag

Geplaatst in: Nieuws, the journey 0

For the project ‘Op Doortocht’ we asked three composers to write a piece, inspired by traveling and the nomadic way of living. Diederik ten Böhmer would have the focus on South America and Bjarni Gudmundsson on folks around the Artic. We asked Diederik van der Laag to focus on stories from Asia. After a journey through books and poems, Diederik read the novella ‘Monsieur Linh et la petite fille’ by the French author Philippe Claudel. He was inspired by the story and decided to compose a piece – in Dutch language – about it.

Monsieur Linh is an East Asian – possibly Vietnamese – refugee to France. Is son and daughter-in-law were killed in an unspecified war, and he has fled to France with his infant granddaughter. Despite the language barrier, he becomes friends with the widower Monsieur Bark, whom he meets on a park bench. The old man Linh sings for Monsieur Bark, in his own language.  But why sing in a language the other can’t understand?

A part of the story (in Dutch):

Dank u.’

It doesn’t need explanation: this story fits perfectly to the theme and purpose of the current project ‘Op Doortocht’. Diederik van der Laag’s composition ‘Het lied van de Oude Man’ will be premiered on the 22nd of April, in Den Haag. In november 2015 his previous composition for JIP was performed for the first time. Listen to a live recording of this beautiful work, sang in the Pieterskerk Utrecht.
